Dental Implant is a dental evolution designed to replace lost natural teeth due to decay, gum disease, accidents, etc. The implant is made of titanium and has a shape similar to a tooth root.
It is implanted into the jawbone, gradually fusing with the bone within 2-4 months. Afterwards, an abutment and crown are placed on the implant. The dentist designs the shape and color of the crown to match the patient’s natural teeth as closely as possible, without affecting the remaining teeth. Implants have a long lifespan and provide chewing efficiency similar to natural teeth. Patients can eat all types of food without discomfort, don’t have to worry in social situations, and it helps with speech pronunciation.
Moreover, implants do not harm adjacent teeth and gums, reduce the resorption of the alveolar ridge that supports dentures, are easy to clean and maintain, and look as beautiful as natural teeth. This has made dental implants increasingly popular and accepted, with a trend towards replacing dental bridges. Dental bridges result in the loss of adjacent natural teeth. Bridges are additions above the gum line, and over time, the bone that supported the extracted tooth gradually dissolves, causing bone collapse in that area, especially in the upper front teeth. When the bone dissolves, it changes facial structure and makes one look older. However, implants help preserve the supporting bone, preventing bone loss and maintaining the original structure.
The implant consists of 3 parts:
- Implant (Fixture) made from titanium metal, which has a shape similar to a tooth root. It is embedded in the jawbone and gradually adheres tightly to the jawbone without affecting the oral tissues or causing any side effects.
- Abutment or crown support post. After implanting the artificial root in the jawbone for about 2-4 months to allow the implant to adhere well to the jawbone, the abutment is then placed on the implant to serve as a support for the crown.
- Crown is the part above the gum line, which is made of porcelain. It has a shape and color similar to the patient’s natural teeth.
The process of making dental implants is divided into 2 parts.
Part 1 The dental implant procedure takes about 7 days, including follow-up visits. However, the actual implantation takes about 1-2 hours. After that, in about 5-7 days, the patient returns for a wound check. This completes the treatment for Part 1.
Part 2 The process of placing the crown on the implant. This part is typically done about 3 months after Part 1 (or even longer, as some people leave the implant for 6 months without any negative effects – in fact, it’s better because it allows the implant to bond more firmly with the bone). The treatment time for this part is about 7-10 days, including the process of sending and receiving work from the lab.
The reason for the 3-month interval between Part 1 and Part 2 is to allow the implant to firmly bond with the jawbone, preventing issues with implant loosening.
*In cases of complex bone grafting, it may be necessary to leave the graft for 3-6 months (in cases of significant bone loss) before starting Part 1.
After completing the dental implant procedure, patients should see their dentist for regular implant check-ups every 6 months.
Reliability
According to research studies and various academic documents, the efficiency of dental implants has been noted to function as effectively as natural teeth. They also closely resemble natural teeth, making it difficult to distinguish them. Dental implants are suitable for everyone who has lost permanent teeth, regardless of age, as long as they are eligible for the procedure. Elderly individuals need not worry about their ability to get implants, as the treatment process is straightforward and uncomplicated. Moreover, for older adults who receive implant treatment, it can bring back vitality to their lives, allowing them to perform daily activities with confidence and enjoy their favorite foods without worry.

FAQ
The duration of a dental implant procedure depends on the number of implants needed. Typically, placing a single implant takes no more than 30 minutes. However, if multiple implants are required, the procedure may take longer. Additionally, if bone grafting is necessary, the process will take a bit more time to ensure the best treatment outcome.
Dental implant placement is a minor surgical procedure done under local anesthesia. Many patients have described the experience as similar to having a tooth extracted, with some even reporting less discomfort than a tooth extraction. Therefore, it doesn’t impact daily life, and no recovery time is needed. After getting a dental implant, you can continue with your regular activities right away.
It depends on the thickness of the patient’s bone. Typically, bone grafting is needed for patients who have been missing teeth for a long time, causing the jawbone to shrink. In such cases, a bone graft is necessary before placing the implant. To put it into perspective, it’s like planting a pole into the ground—if there isn’t enough soil, the pole may fall over. So, adding bone is similar to adding more soil.
It’s important to note that the pain from getting a dental implant is comparable to, or even less than, that of a tooth extraction. However, this can vary from patient to patient. Based on our experience with numerous implant cases and feedback from patients after the procedure, most report that the discomfort is less than that of a tooth extraction or wisdom tooth removal.
Chewing with a dental implant is very similar to chewing with natural teeth. Since the implant is embedded into the jawbone, the chewing forces are transmitted directly to the bone, resulting in efficient performance and a chewing sensation that closely resembles that of natural teeth.

Same-day dental implant surgery is technically possible for everyone, but it comes with increased costs. More importantly, it depends on the patient’s readiness. Dental implant surgery primarily requires adequate bone density, and there are other factors to consider, such as the patient’s oral hygiene habits and the intensity of their chewing force. The dentist will evaluate these factors to determine if the patient is suitable for the procedure.
What patients really want is a single treatment that results in long-lasting implants. This requires good planning. While quick treatment is beneficial, what dentists prioritize for patients is ensuring that the implants are functional, provide long-term value, and that the patient receives appropriate treatment. These are the crucial aspects.
You can eat normally, but we recommend starting with soft foods in the initial period, such as rice porridge or congee. Avoid very hot or spicy foods. If possible, it’s even better to consume cool foods.
Some minor swelling is normal and typically lasts no more than 1-2 weeks. For some patients, the swelling is minimal and subsides within 1-2 days.
However, patients who also undergo bone grafting may experience more pronounced swelling for about 2 weeks. Some individuals heal faster and their swelling may subside more quickly. Ultimately, it varies from person to person, as everyone’s body responds differently.
